Hotel Victoria Bistro
Centralbahnhofplatz,
Basel
Reviewed 10th February 2004
Yet another of the Railway Station hostelries. Great terrace in the summer, a little limited for space in the winter unless they feel charitable and allow customers to use the restaurant itself, rather than the small, cramped and always far too smoky bar area.
Higher prices than some places, but nice surroundings and in a good position: they even have their own underground car park!
Tea (Fr. 4.-) comes served as a Tea bag in a paper bag with a glass of hot water – when will they learn? All the Swiss I know hate this misuse of tea – like the original Victoria, they are not amused! Coffee is OK, but isn’t always so hot. At Fr. 4.80 it should be every time! Tastes OK though.
Still, when picking up the English papers on a Sunday, it is a nice place to sit and read while the world passes by. And the smokers can’t pollute your air supply so well on the terrace in the summer, so that’s when it is at its best.
