After a training run for the Ekiden Marathon Relay, my team-mates and I were in dire need of refreshment. On a Sunday afternoon there is not a lot open in Basel however the Holzschopf was most definitely open and had some spare tables.

Inside is a fairly typical Swiss restaurant and this carries through to the menu which has the usual array of Roesti, Schnitzel etc etc.

When we got there, they had the Wilde menu – so I picked the Rehpfeffer with red cabbage and spaetzli. The Goulaschsuppe I had for starter was nice and hot and hit the spot after a run in the chill autumn air.

My main course was good. My companions had the laeberli and the vegetable roesti both of which looked great.

Service was prompt and friendly. Pricewise, we paid SFr40 per head for starter, main course and drinks.

If you are out for a stroll in Kleinbasel on a Sunday, the Holzschopf is worth a visit.
