Last Visit – 16 January 2003 (Nick Steven)

The Aida is right by the IWB tram stop and from the outside looks like many a Basel pizzeria. It was only on close inspection of the menu outside that I discovered that they have a comprehensive Moroccan menu.

The interior was fairly nondescript however it was nice and roomy and it appeared to double up as a regular bar.

I started with the harira – bean and lamb soup – which was delicious. Nice and hot. For main course I had the Tagine Royale (lamb with prunes and sesame seeds) which was very tasty though I had to add a spot of harissa to give it a little kick. One of our party had the lamb tagine with vegetables – and I think I will go for that next time as you get a good sized portion.

The main courses took a while to arrive but they were all freshly cooked – so I suppose there has to be a trade-off somewhere.

At the time we went – in January 2003 – the place had only been open a few weeks – and it also had a Mediterranean menu – I hope they concentrate on the Moroccan side to be honest. The owner was very friendly and the service very attentive. Not bad for a newly opened place.

This is definitely one to go back to and support.
